The Problem
Subchondral bone diseases diseases are a diverse group of conditions affecting the critical layer of bone beneath joint cartilage, leading to cartilage damage and osteoarthritis. These diseases affect individuals of all ages and include osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), avascular necrosis, subchondral bone cysts, osteochondrosis and bone marrow lesions (BML, precursors to osteoarthritis). Current surgical drilling treatments are invasive, expensive, and have a ~80% failure rate. Further, the treatment time is 3+ year in Canada during which limited to no sports or activities can be performed.
